On Sunday, November 1 from 11am to 5pm, the San Jose Museum of Art will host a Día de los Muertos celebration. This celebration, which is free and open to the public, includes a wide variety of activities such as hands-on art making, music, dance performances, storytelling, and much more.

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is an important and joyful holiday, celebrated in Latin America and parts of the United States, which brings families together to celebrate the lives of their ancestors. Officially celebrated on November 1 and 2, families and communities come together to share their love and respect for their loved ones with all night vigils, song and dance, sharing of special holiday foods, and by building altars.

Performance
Traditional Mexican music performed by local group.
Story teller. Listen to the story that tells the history of the Day of the Dead along with family stories, myths, folk tales and legends. Join in the discovery of the power of ceremony, and experience an opportunity to look at life and death in a more personal way.

Hands-on Art Activities
Calaveras de Azúcar (sugar skulls)
In the tradition of Mexican folk artists, use colorful royal icing, foil and wire to decorate skulls which are made of solid sugar.

Flores de Papeles (paper flowers)
Cut and fold multi-colored tissue paper to create beautiful flowers.

Tin Art
Use an embossing technique on tooling foil to create interesting textures and patterns in metal.
