The Power of Dogu Dogu is Japanese ceramic figure from pre-historic time. The type of statues were produced in the Jomon Era, and they don't look anything like material culture generally associated with Japan. They are rather like the Venus of willendorf. We don't know their exact functions, but they are believed to be objects of worship. I liked these statues since I was an elementary school kid. They looked very mysterious to me, especially the ones with goggles. The Exhibition "The Power of Dogu" was originally held at the British Museum. This show gives us opportunity to see the Japanese pre-historic statues in a large quantity, including the ones designated as national treasures and important cultural properties and important art objects. I usually do not organize event at Tokyo National Museum since their exhibitions tend to be mobbed. However, when I called up the museum last week, I learned that the show is not that crowded unlike the other blockbusters there. Would you like to check out Dogus with me? Location: Mori Art Museum Access Map Time: 3:00 PM Admission Fee: ¥800 Description of the Exhibition Chat session after the show As usual, let's have a chat session after the show. When we meet up before the exhibition, let's decide where we go after the show.

Medicine and Art There is a fascinating museum called "La Specola" in Florence. It is a Museum of Zoology and Natural History, and they are famous for their collection of anatomical wax figures. The 18the century artifacts are gruesome in one respect, but utterly beautiful from purely aesthetic point of view. Since these wax figures were created for medical purposes, we don't learn about them in art history. However, I believe that they at least belong to the back-door of art. Medical science has had a close affinity with art. As a highlight of this exhibition, three anatomical sketches by Leonardo da Vinci, infers, artists in the past studied human body to improve or perfect their representational skills. Unlike other exhibitions dealing with the same subject, this exhibition showcases not only works of art but also medical artifacts. This is a very unique opportunity. I definitely would like to take advantage of it with some of you. Location: Mori Art Museum Access Map Time: 4:00 PM Admission Fee: ¥1,500 Description of the Exhibition Chat session after the show As usual, let's have a chat session after the show. When we meet up before the exhibition, let's decide where we go after the show.

Sebastião Salgado AFRICA Sebastião Salgado is a master of contemporary documentary photography, who presents us the state of our contemporary society with his beautifully captured images. In a way, he is a sociologist who communicates his understandings of the world with his images. His works are aesthetically pleasing yet conceptually insightful and thought provoking. I suppose some of you are familiar with his magnum opus, Workers. If you have not heard of him, this is a great opportunity to be touched by his beautiful visual messages. Many of you are probably not available to visit a museum on Friday evening. But if you don't have to do overtime at your work, please join us for this meetup event. Location: Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography Access Map Time: 6:30 PM Admission Fee: ¥800 Description of the Exhibition Chat session after the show After the exhibition, let's have a dinner together and chat about art, photography, and etc.

Afternoon at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo There are a few interesting exhibitions taking place at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. The most interesting one among them for me is a solo exhibition of Rebecca Horn. Horn is one of the most renowned German artists in her generation. In her career, she has been engaging in performance pieces and creating beautiful yet playful kinetic objects and art installations. I saw her retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in 1993, and truly enjoyed her works. I would like to see them again in this exhibition and spend the rest of afternoon at the museum to check out two shows on fashion. Hope some of you are interested in joining me. Movie: Dance Film Variation - Postmodern Dance Image forum will screen a series of films associated to dance from September 19th. The series is called "Dance Film Variation," and covers a great number of pivotal dancers/choreographe rs of 20th century from Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, to William Forsythe. On Friday the 25th, I would like to check out films on capture Postmodern dance. Through the films, works of Yvonne Rainer, Meredith Monk, Lucinda Childs, Trisha Brown, and others will be presented. You may not be familiar with these dancers/choreographe rs, but they are pivotal figures for Postmodern movement. Those who are interested in contemporary art most likely will enjoy their works. Movie: Dance Film Variation - Maurice Béjart Image forum will screen a series of films associated to dance from September 19th. The series is called "Dance Film Variation," and covers a great number of pivotal dancers/choreographe rs of 20th century from Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, to William Forsythe. This seems to be an amazing opportunity to see dance films to which we usually don't have any access, and I am planning to catch as many films as possible during the screenings. To start, I would like to see films of/about the works of Maurice Béjart. Some of you are probably aware of him. Béjart found the 20th Century Ballet and redefined choreography for Ballet performances. Through the screening, we will be able to see his staple choreographic work in "Borelo," and dances of his protégé, Jorge Donn. If you are interested in dance, but don't know who Béjart is. I highly recommend you to join me to see the films. You may not like his style, but he is definitely an important choreographer whom you need to know to talk about the history of dance in the second half of 20th century. The Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum The Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum showcases 27 historic buildings existed in Tokyo area from the Edo period to the beginning of the Showa era. These buildings were relocated from their original locations or reconstructed there in order to preserve architectural heritages of Tokyo. A renowned animator, Hayao Miyazaki visited this museum to get inspirations when he was working on "Spirited Away." Of course, an old bath house is one of the attractions of this museum. Those of you who are interested in Japanese architectures and fans of the wonderful Ghibli animation will enjoy this museum trip, I believe. Let's get lost in the land of forgotten dreams. In addition to their permanent collections, they are showing old shop signs in their special exhibition space. I love those signs, especially the three dimensional ones. Hope I will be able to share my enthusiasm towards them with some of you.
